Do you know how to check for spark?
Do you have a can of carb / choke cleaner?

When the vehicle won't start, check for spark. Is this engine fuel injected or carburetor ?

If you have spark, spray a few shots of choke cleaner into the intake then try to start the vehicle. If it starts you do have spark ,but have a fuel problem.
Before going any further , let us know what you have or don't have up to this point. Thanks,,,,,,,,,,,,hanky

i have already sprayed starting fluid in the intake when it dies and when i do that it will fire but then die again so im prett sure i got spark could it be my egr valve i took it off and i pussed on the little plunger and it made no difference in the way the engine was running and it is fuel injected

OK , now we have isolated the problem to fuel/ air systems. Your post was a little confusing to me, but let's move on. When you lifted the pintle of the EGR valve with the engine at idle, I believe you state it made no difference. If this is so, the EGR passages are clogged with carbon or the valve is not seating properly since you should have no EGR supplied to the engine at idle and this could prevent it from running or starting. Those 4.9 engines were a good engine and ran for many good miles. Hang in there , we can help get the problem cleared once we determine just what it is.,,,,,,,,,hanky

Well I have got it running well I had a exhaust leak and I thought it was just coming out of the exhaust manafold but after I pulled off my intake manafold and found out that the leak was coming out of a pipe that had broke of I'm not reall sure what it was called but I know it had something to do with the emissions controll junk it was a pipe that had ran into the top of the motor that ran to all six cylinders and it ran into something else that was connected to the air pump so I just pulled all of that junk off and left a open hose to the air pump and I plugged the holes on the motor with spark plugs (that was the only thing I could find at the time to fit into the holes but I'm going to run to my old schools machine shop and make me some plugs to fit in there but ever since I have done that it's been running fine misses a little but I know I have some vacuum lines that need fixed but that's for all the help if you would like any more info just email me
