If you had a 1/4 inch of play anywhere that is a bad thing. You would have definately felt something going from drive to reverse. I have done a lot of pinion bearings over the years (40+). It is a time consuming job and there is some setup specs that need to be adhered to. Such as side gear clearance, backlash, contact pattern, pinipn depth and pinion bearing preload. Good luck.

You can change the pinion seal in the driveway. Just jack up rear end and safely support it on jack stands. The easy way to get the proper torque on tightening the nut iios to measure the torque it needs to break it loose.

For my own info, How is this 1/4 inch ply being measured?
Is it up and down at the pinion flange or is it in & out,
or is it being measured by how much the driveline rotates?
If it is up & down or in & out at the flange you received your answer from way2old
and I agree with it.
Did you recheck it yourself?
