Default fuel gauge not working.

Hello i have a 2008 F-150 and the the gas gauge stopped working around november when the around hunting season. when it warms up the gauge seems to try to work but it wont when its cold. the garage told me its the fuel sending unit and to fix it i would have to replace the whole tank which is about $800 just for the tank. is this my only option or is it possible that something is just frozen and should fix itself once it warms up again?

Stopped working meaning, empty? or?

The tank doesn't need to be replaced, but needs to be dropped to remove the fuel tank module. The tank module has a replacable level sender, There a TSB for early MY builds with sender issues from deposits collecting on the sender causing an open..

Could be a cluster/gauge issue too, but if they run a resistance test (depending on current fuel level) at the harness connector would prove out the sender..

The truck still runs fine. we keep it full and keep track of the miles so we dont run out. the guage simply wont register a level. and it always read low fuel on the dash.
