pitman arm seal
I have a 1995 f150. and it is pouring power steering fluid from the location of the pitman arm. i have it all apart and can't put it back together because the folks at auto zone gave me the wrong part. i need to know what the new seals look like, i think that the old ones are blown out. if anybody has a diagram of what has to be done to fix this, part number for the new part and /or pictures of what is looks like, i would be extremely grateful. and just to let everyone know i have tried searching and came up empty. and if anybody knows a link to an online manual, that would be great too.
Thanks

RE: pitman arm seal
i appreciate the effort but that link was to a page showing me how to check the level of power steering fluid. i was asking for help on how to chang the pitman arm seal. i have been doing all of the work on the truck that i have now for about 6 years. i have changed axles, driveshaft, fuel tank, radius arm bushings, and a bunch of other things that i can't remember. i need aid with my current problem because it looks pretty messed up in there and i can't tell what it is supposed to look like. so if you have anything else regarding the repairing of the pitman arm seal, that would be much more helpful.
thanks

RE: pitman arm seal
Steering gear output seal. I can't say I've ever attempted to replace one thats leaking. In general when a steering gear starts leaking, you replace the gear.
If you were able to find a new seal for it, you'd need to pull the pitman arm for access(special tool:Pitman Arm Puller). Probably drill a small hole into the seal(don't touch the sides or shaft!!!!), insert a coarse thread screw and try pulling it out by the screw. Insert the new seal with a tube and light taps with a hammer? Other than that, I don't know what to tell you. I doubt there's many people out there who could tell you the right way to do it and I'm pretty sure you won't be able to find a manual on it.
Good luck

ryan remove pitman arm, remove c clamp, start engine and turn steering wheel all the way to left lock or right lock to apply pressure to the seals which should blow them out, just make sure you have a bucket below to catch all the fluid.check shaft for wear if its good replace seals, washer and c clamp then replace fluid, pull coil wire off so engine doesnt start and turn key while turning the wheel to re distribute fluid through system.replace coil wire start engine and turn lock to lock check for leaks if none reassemble and drive it like ya stole it happy wrenching hope that helped
