Default Transmission Swap - 1990 F-150 XLT Lariat

I am going to be replacing the Transmission from one Ford to the other. Both are 1990 F-150 XLT's. AT. I have a Chilton for the thing, but just trying to get an idea of some of the things I will need for this such as "do I need gaskets, and where; what color permatex should I use; Should I replace the filter with a new one or keep the best out of the two. Any and all advice will be surely appreciated. thanx

Never, but Never reuse a trans filter. The risk of contamination is too great. Do yourself a favor and get a new filter with the pan gasket, and install it.
As far as the swap, there were 2 models of transmissions (the old AOD or the early E4OD transmision, which was identified by size, and if it has a plug in on the right side of the case), it was very straigtforward. You don't have to mess with the exhuast at all, just work around it, or otherwise you could enter exhaust leak hell.
I'd bet these are 4x4, if so, just remove the t-case and work your way forward. These aren't that hard to do.

Thanks a ton. I've done transmissions on smaller trucks, but never on a ford. And you are correct, they are both 4x4.
