Default 1973 F-350 gas mileage

Hey guys I have a few questions that I would like answered. I have just pulled my engine because i threw a rod. My dad has the same kind of engine as I do and is letting me buy it off of him. The engine is a 390 and i was wondering if there is anything i could do to improve the gas mileage on it. My dad said that putting cast-iron headers would help and putting an HEI distributor would help. Would this help my gas mileage and is there any other things I can do? And is it even worth them money?

....we had '67 CS wagon with the 390/C-6.Mieage was not their forte'.I think a 351 W would be a good alternative. There's a greater choice of parts around...JMHO.
