So this problem has been bugging me for a few weeks now. I have a 2004 F-250, not diesel, 5.4L engine that after taking me on a trip that lasts more than around an hour and a half, refuses to start again after being turned off without first sitting for about 30 minutes. I have taken it to the ford dealer and a Tires Plus shop to get checked out but neither place could find the problem. The dealership even tried to reproduce the problem without success. The last time this happened the truck was only running for bout 10 minutes, but the temperature outside was about 85 degrees. Has anyone else had this issue? I could really use some help.

When I try to crank it after it is hot, it sounds like it's turning over, but never fires.

 

As you know when we get a problem like this we usually check for fuel and/or spark.
What you can try is, take the easiest coil to remove and remove the small bolt that holds it in place out so when you have the problem you can remove the coil and lay it where the spring inside can be close to a ground piece of the engine. now if you crank it and it won't start, observe the coil and see if the spark jumps to ground when cranking.
If it does and it still won't start , the next thing you can try is shoot a spurt of carb & choke cleaner into the air intake and see if it starts then, even for a few seconds.
If so there is a fuel problem. Depending on what result you receive will determine what path to pursue.

 

This sounds like a dead ringer for a fuel pump. Here's a way to make a liar out of me.
If you crank the engine when it won't start, and it 'catches', like it wants to start but won't, thats a weak fuel pressure concern. replace the pump.

 

Just to clarify, I don't here the truck firing at all when I try to crank it. Then after a little while it starts with no issues.

 

Try unplugging the plugs on the PCM and then plugging them back in. Some vehicles had water intrusion issues where those plugs go in. It's worth a shot ! If you see any corrosion you found the problem.
