2004 F-250 5.4 Gas Fuel Economy
Hello guys, I'm new to the forum, and after looking on the internet, I am not satisfied with information regarding the fuel economy on my truck.
I just recently bought a 2004 F-250 XL Super Duty 5.4 (gas) truck and I would like to know what some of you others are getting for gas mileage. I've only had it for a couple of weeks, and I pull an enclosed trailer with a gross weight of about 8,400 lbs (when full).
I only got 9.4 mpg pulling the trailer, and I was disappointed. And that included probably 100 highway miles. I've got a 29 gallon tank and I was only able to go about 197 miles on about 3/4 of a tank? I figured at least 11 or 12 mpg. And now I'm curious to what I will get w/out pulling the trailer.
If any of you know what mpg I should expect pulling all that weight and what mpg I should expect w/out pulling the trailer, I would really appreciate it.

I hate to tell ya, but I think you're getting about average for pulling the trailer. I pull a travel trailer (about 6000 lbs max) with an 06 F250 4X4 and the best I can do is 10-11 mpg. That's if I don't have any headwind. I keep it around 60 when towing. I was down to 8mpg in a headwind once. As far as non towing, I can get 15-16 straight highway, but that's keeping it at 65. For highway/town mix, I'm in the 13-14 range. I love the truck and what it will do and I've come to rationalize the fuel use. This fuel use is not unique to the F250. Chev and Dodge 3/4 ton trucks will not be much better. Enjoy your truck for the reason you got it.

Here's the verdict.
I don't know why, but my 17 y.o. dtr always seems to get better milage than I do. Out of six full tanks of hwy driving the best I got was 14.8. That was on the tank with no stops between fill ups and the cruise on 70. When increased up to 75mph the milage went down to 14.0. Those were the only two tanks with no stops in between. The others ranged from 13.8 to 14.3 with diffrent speeds. I wanted to try one with a speed of 55 or 60, but I didn't have the patience.
Since this original post, I have made only one trip with the TT(4,000 lb). It was a short trip, but the average ended up being 11.1.
Over all not bad. I can live with those numbers knowing I can pull what I have withouut worry.

I have a new 2008 F-250 reg cab 2WD with the 5.4 and a 6-speed manual trans. Went on a 150 mile road trip, going 70-74 MPH with some wind, got 11.8 according to the truck's nifty computer. Hummnn, maybe should have kept the 2006 Chevy 2500HD, but the new Ford is a lot tougher.
