2006 E-350 Transmission Clunking/Slipping?
Hi everyone,
In July my 2006 E-350 torque convertor chewed itself apart and destroyed my transmission. The transmission was rebuilt by a reputable show and was driving great. About a 1000 miles later, it developed clunking and hard shifting when starting from a stop under load and warm. I took it back to the shop...they check the trans and said it was fine but when they could not find anything out definitely wrong, they changed it again...still had the same problem. They checked the wiring harness between the trans and computer and it was fine. They then decided it was the computer which was replaced and seemed to fix the problem.
Now about 300 miles later, it is clunking again from a stop in all gears (D, 2, 1) except reverse. It is especially noticible when starting from a stop in a steady manner (normal acceleration). When accelerating hard or babying it, nothing abnormal happens. More noticible going up a hill from a stop. It only clunks/slips(?) hard in the starting gear.
I have a 3000 mile trip planned in 4 weeks and need to get this figured out.
Any ideas???
Thanks,
Brian

Ok, I'm sure I'll probably catch grief about this from somewhere, but I'll take a risk and say this is a 4R70W family trans. The Torqshift was a better trans, but if you could tell us specifically what's in this it would help in the diag.
This is weird. If it runs well at the extremes, there are a few things to check.
If this has a real noticable clunk when starting out, put it in manual 1 and start out. Is the noise/clunk better, worse, or the same? If you come to a quick stop, does it 'shuffle' through the gears (and clunk) when comming up to a stop?
There were many, many problems with the #9 thrust washer (at the very rear of the trans) breaking, which would be more noticable on a highway type drive. If this is at slower speeds, it could have a pressure/valve problem, but this is only (all) supposition.
Of course, if it's a Torqshift, then none of this applies.
Let us know.

The clunking only happens when starting from a full stop. It is find once underway and is not an issue when stopping.
Had a P0709 code the other day and the shop where it is in for trans warrenty work changed the trans range sensor...it was fine for about 20 miles and then started again. It goes back in tomorrow. It now has a P0705 Trans Range Sensor Circuit Malfunction (PRNDL Input) code.
Any ideas?

When the transmission was originally rebuild, I had them replace both U-joints also....any chance that this could be the problem and it could be related to the trans change or the fact they had to drop the driveshaft to change the U-joints?
