Default 7.3 shuts down

After 5-10 seconds after starting sometimes the engines shuts down. A couple times while coasting. Never during higher rpms. A couple times it hesitated at 30 mph. At these times I get the emissions warning light. A free computer check at Autozone reviews no codes. Map sensor? This is a 7.3 2002.
Thanks in advance
Robin

How often does the stall occur and at what temps, or is it just on 'initial' start? Does it restart imediately afterwards on a stall? Miles on the truck?

CMP(Cam PositionSensor) failures are pretty common on the 7.3.. If the sensor fails you'll loose the tach signal.. Without a tach signal the IDM won't fire the injectors. If the engine doesn't restart right off, look at the tach while cranking and see if you see aneedle movement/bounce.. Even with a scan tool sometmes a bad CMP/circuit can be hard to diagnose.. If its the original, areplacement wouldn't hurt.. The DTC would be handy to have for a more clear direction, but with their given history of problems probably the first place I'd look.. Not the only thing that can cause a stall though, or a hard start..

Does it just cut out when driving down the road or sound like it skips a beat every now and then? We replaced many of those cam sensors in those things.I have an International with the same motor & did mine twice in 75,000 miles. Hayapower is probably right. We also found they have had problems with the valve cover gaskets. The wiring inside them goes bad & they do something similar to what we're talking about, but more of an intermittent misfire or running real rough.
