Default 97 F250

This past weekend I encountered a new potential problem with my automatic 1997 F-250. A couple of times over the weekend it wouldn't shift to drive. It got stuck in nuetral I guess, but if I shifted back to another gear and then to drive it would catch and do just fine as if nothing happened. The transmission seems to be fine in drive.
Also once after being in 4 wheel drive for 30 min to an hour, and once after 2 1/2 hours of highway driving the truck cut off when switching between drive and reverse.
There were no noises associated with either of these issues and it performs no different now than before these few incidents.
Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this to happen?
