Just signed up to see if anyone can help me with my 2000 7.3 starting problem. I took my truck to the Ford dealership and they can't find anything wrong, on cold mornings if it's not plugged in it won't start, I have replaced the glow plug relay before taking it to the shop which didn't help. When it's idling the idle goes up until it warms up and back down and then back up again. I read the post from "hanky" and what is the MIL?

Default 2000 7.3 cold weather hard starting

I'm having trouble starting on cold mornings if I don't plug it in. I have replaced the glow plug relay which didn't help. I took it to the Ford shop which couldn't find anything so I'm looking for help. While it is running the idle goes up until it's warm and then comes down and then back up again. What is the MIL?

MIL= malfunction indicator lamp
The glow plug system includes the glow plug relay , the wiring to the individual glow plugs and the glow plugs themselves. The wiring at the valve covers can have a problem if the power is not getting to the glow plugs.

The shop tested and all of the glow plugs were good, taking it back so they can check with their scanner Monday to see when they try to start it what comes up. Is there a sensor problem as I was reading about a fault if the engine idles up even after it's warm.

Thanks for the reply.

I've been running regular diesel all the way from California to Montana with the octane booster additive from Ford.
