misaligned pulleys

RE: misaligned pulleys
Usually the only belt alignment issues are from an incorrect P/S pulley install if the P/S pump has been replaced.. Sometimes the pulley is pressed on too far, or not far enough.. It also can be damaged/worn from 'multiple' prior installs/work and may possibly 'walk' on the shaft.. Had one on a 7.3 just weeks ago.. The correct placement for the P/S pulley is 'flush' on the pulley hub/face with the pump shaft.. On rare occasion, a reman. water pump may have the pulley/hub installed wrong, shallow or deep, but not very likely, and even less likely an issue for the 5.8, as the belt runs flat on its backside over the pump pulley and has 'some' range of service area.. It's not very common any more for misaligned fead belts as their drive components are pinned/bolted to their mounting casting.. Unlless mismatched idlers are installed, or part quality issue.. Not like 'days of old' when Ford used multiple spacers, pressed steel mounting brackets and different pulley combinations and such.. A misaligned belt in most cases will have a shorter life, or may shred.. If the belt were to loose surface area, become glazed, and/or have a tension problem it will squeal on accell. but not at idle.. With the wide surface area of the fead belt, just sighting across the belts length usually gives you an idea of a misaligned belt path..
