Pump keeps running
Hello im new here and dont know if my question has been asked
i have a 1996 f250 was given to me with rear tank and pump out they was not getting fuel to engine and had jumper wires and crap i put new pump in and cut all jumper wires
im getting fuel now but the pump stays on and fuel is getting on top of cylinder number 1
Any ideas will be great also replaced preassure regulator
Thankyou

Maybe we can offer some helpful suggestions.
tt would seem there are at least 2 problems, pump running all the time and fuel leaking getting out..
Need to know just where fuel on top of cylinder means, . Inside cylinder or top of engine at cyl #1 location on engine.
Also, does the engine run when front tank is selected and does any fuel leak out then?
What engine is in the vehicle?
Do you have any kind of test equip to use? If so , what kind?
How many wires do you presently have at the rear tank and if possible can you describe the colors ?

i have power to relay with key off turn key on and the other point gets hot and stays on
Thanks

One thing is you are there and I am here, but with your experience we shouldn't have too much trouble pinning it down.
I would think there is "usually" only one way fuel can get into that cyl and that is if the injector is staying open. As you know , a fuel pressure gauge would be able to help prove that theory as the pressure after the engine is shut down should hold , but three reasons it could drop off would be a stuck open pressure regulator, ,a defective check valve in the in tank fuel pump and our last way is with a leaking fuel injector.
If I recall correctly the ECM provides the ground for the fuel pump relay to run for 2 seconds when you first turn the key on (KOEO). If no signal from the ign syst is received , the ECM opens that circuit to denergize the fuel pump relay. If the wiring has not been altered (which we do not know at this time) and no crank signal is being sent to the ECM what is allowing that relay to provide power to the fuel pump ? If no direct wiring cause is found it could be a stuck closed fuel pump relay, a defective ECM sending a ground to the coil of the fuel pump relay holding it energized OR who knows if the correct rely is in there. As a reminder, you know when you go to remove the fuel rail and change that injector you need to replace all the "O" rings on the remaining injectors before reinstalling them.
Hope I was able to be of some assistance.
