Default starter engagement

my 460 starter went out. i bought one from a chain store and the gear hits the flexplate. took it back got another and the same problem. i gave up and bought one from another store and will pick it up wednesday. if this one doesn't work my only question will be are all these rebuilt ones made by the same place in china.

Did we look carefully at the flexplate to make sure there is no problem there?

When you state the starter went out , please tell us just what caused you to determine the starter had a problem. If after we change 3 starters , guess what,
"it aint the starter".
Did you compare the old starter to the replacement?

Default starter

the truck has run all year with no problems until one day it didn't turn over anymore. i jumped the solenoid and nothing. i didn't check the original one to the new ones as i used it as a core..i bought everything new and still nothing. the original starter was a lot smaller than the new ones. i noticed the battery ground was on the motor so i ran a ground to the frame. then it turned over and started but it made a bang and a screech. i got another starter today from another store and i will see if it works. yes i checked it and the gear is the same size but it looks like the mounting bolt holes may be clocked a little different. we will see. thanks for the reply.

Some folks may not be aware, but there are differences between starter housings on a vehicle with an auto tans versus a std trans.

well it was the starter. the new one turned it over without all the racket. i don't really know why but it works. that is all i care about. now maybe i can get on the other 22 projects i have. i am 74 years old and have been doing this since i was 12 with my older brother. i build drag cars and bikes and street rods. i was an aerospace engineer for 36 years so i am no young chicken. i build everything from frames to body and paint and interiors. i have a garage the envy of most shops. lathes mills you name it. i also am a fiberglass expert. i build molds and parts. the one thing i have noticed about these message boards is people that post on your thread assume they no more than you do.
sometimes it's that they have never came across your problem. another thing i have realized is we don't have the rebuilders we used to, since most do all their rebuilds in china. thanks for the replies either way.

Thanks for being so understanding. Unfortunately all you say is so true regarding quality of parts these days.

Everybody is looking to make that profit so they push the junk that provides the greatest return.
That is the main reason I try to stay with OEM because they can't afford to keep handling comebacks.
You might pay a little more , but you usually do the job once.
