white smoke 7.3l diesel
I have a 1999 f250 with a 7.3l turbo diesel. I started it and it made a pinging noise extremely loud and blew a lot of white smoke. I checked my levels and my coolant was low. I put more coolant in and it went back to the same low level it was at when i first checked it. I checked my oil dipstick and theres no trace of water. It was raining but it looked like there was fluid coming from under my truck. It had that rainbow look like oil, but it was under the coolant on the drivers side. Im lost on this 1, I dont think its my head gasket because theres no water on the dip stick, I think it may be my water pump. But not sure. Any input or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

RE: white smoke 7.3l diesel
U really need to go to www.fordtruckfanatics.com & go to the 7.3 powerstroke section NOW!!!!! I can't remember what that is, but it's not good. Don't start your truck aagain until u talk to them.
Also, u may want to check out the coolant section, we, 1999 f250 7.3l diesels are NOT supposed to add just anything to our trucks!!!

RE: white smoke 7.3l diesel
Any diesel fuel in the cooling system?
Could be an injector cup leaking causing coolant intrusion into the combustion chamber/s that wouldn't necessarily show up in the the engine oil.. If it were a coolant leak only, chances are you wouldn't see a 'rainbow'.. If it's puking or leaking any liquids, that would be good info to have, and a good starting point.. Does the coolant level drop consistantly, how much is added each time? and only white smoke on the startup? Cold/hot ect.. Does the white smoke smell like fuel (burn your eyes) or have a sweet smell?
