Unhappy Ford 500 CVT replacement

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to replace a failed CVT in my 2006 Ford 500 with a 6-speed? The CVT has been a problem from the day I drove this vehicle off the lot. According to what I can find, the 6-speed will fit "physically" however, I am concerned I am potentially overlooking processor/computer issues making this change. Any advise?

Thanks!

If you find a 500 with a 6speed tranny in the boneyard or anyplace else, get the computer to go with it. As long as the tranny harness are the same between the 6sp and cvt there shouldnt be any issue. We have been computer swapping in Gen1, Gen 2 SHO's for years. The MTX cars have been swapping out for a 92 MTX computer a 94 ATX for the auto SHO's

This is my first time on this site so not sure how to direct this question to bamsho who replied to replacing the CVT transmission with a 6 speed in a Ford 500. Can this be done in the AWD version as well. I would like to purchase a Ford 500 AWD but the reports on the CVT transmission is enough to keep me away. Soon I may find an AWD with a blown transmission and if so I want to know how to replace the CVT with a 6 speed. I would have no interest in a 500 that was not an AWD.

Thanks.

Thumbs up Ford Five Hundred cvt to 6 speed

YES! It can be done. My FWD Ford Five Hundred with 178k miles eventually stopped going in reverse and would not shift gears. The cvt rebuild options were not affordable ($3,000!). I got a 6 speed transmission with 65k miles for $650 and its harness. I did not change the computer or have it reprogrammed. Along with the harness a few nuts and bolts are different. The CVT is much larger than the 6 speed so no issues with it fitting. A few wires were deemed unnecessary because the CVT has a few extra wires in comparison with the 6 speed so they were taped off. A lot of work but worth it if you know cars. Car runs like a champ and I expect another 200k miles from the motor!

Kate: Thanks for the good news! I have an '05 SE with the CVT, but not the AWD. It has almost 49K, and still runs great.

Default owner of 2005 five hundred

Your better off buying a Honda. I got a quote for $5,000 for a rebuilt. My trans is fine now, but judging from 3 taurus/five hundred web sites, I can expect it to go. The junk yard I go to is just full of tauruses and five hundreds, meaning they, and ford, suck. There isn't a honda newer than 1995 in the yard.

I don't blame you for being ticked off! I am hoping, and praying, that I got a hold of a "good" CVT. I know of 2 other people who have gotten over 240K out of their CVTs. One may have sold his recently. Mine has 50K. Bought it from my Mom's estate last April. The only problem I had was when a "pin" got loose and wouldn't let me start, or take it out of gear. At first the Ford dealership in Champaign had thought that the CVT quit. That's when I remembered about this "pin". That fixed the problem. Someone, I think on this site, did replace theirs with a 6 speed with no problems. When my CVT decides to quit I will be making that decision to junk or fix. I am really enjoying this car!

Cool Cvt Rebuild

Hi Kate, did you say you had rebuild options available to you? If so, could you share? My 2005 babe has developed a noise and I need a new CVT or rebuild and I am having issues finding one; any information you can provide I would appreciate,

Default Cvt to 6speed

So do you need full wiring harness or do you just leave extra connections unhooked I know I’m a little late to this thread and it’d very doubtful anyone will get back to me I just figured I’d ask I have a cut I’m looking to replace with 6speed
