Default 2007 Focus sedan floor shifter (automatic)

This is my son's car and I noticed the retainer screw that holds the shifter **** on the shaft worked loose and fell off. I have screw but the little button that switches the overdrive will no longer work. It's stuck in its normal position. Since without the screw you can nearly pull the shifter assembly off the shaft, the only thing that keeps it from coming completely off is a fiber covered flat cable running inside the shaft up to the shifter ****. I'm assuming this has something to do with the overdrive switch not working. Maybe he pulled it up too hard and that cable got disconnected. Everything works ok except for the overdrive switch.

Before I try to disassemble the shifter mechanism, is there anyone here familiar with it and how the overdrive switching works?

Steve
