Default Starting Problem

Hi all.

I recently bought a '06 Ford Focus 1.4 Zetec (Irish / UK). The car was fine for the first couple of days but then began giving trouble when starting from cold. It seems that whenever the car is cold and needs to idle at a higher RPM it cuts out. You can overcome this problem by revving the engine for a second. When you lift off the throttle the rev counter seems to jump around for a while before settling on the idling RPM.

I suspect I might have a problem with the choke or throttle body. I plugged the car into a generic OBD2 computer and it shows fault "P1443 Evaporative Emission Control System - Vacuum System - Purge Control Solenoid or Purge Control Valve fault". There is no fault light on the dash and all are working after lamp test.

Has anyone seen this before? Is the fault (P1443) related to the problem starting the car??

Please tell me it's not going to cost me a fortune. Thanks for the help.
