Default 2000 Explorer 4 wheel drive issue

I hope I can explain this alright. I have no trouble with the spring, summer, fall, only in winter. When there is icy slush or snow, when the 4 x 4 is in auto the car will jerk mostly at higher speeds like it is trying to go into 4 wheel drive. I thought I would just put in 4 x 4 high and drive it does the same thing. It makes me vary nervous to drive it in bad weather. It does not do this in the rain only slush or snow. Is this a sensor problem? The rest of the time it drives fine.
