Oil Issues
#11
10 years, 140,000+ miles that around 14,000 miles per year on the same oil. Depending on the type of miles driving, I'd say your engine is worn out from not frequent enough oil changes.
I drive a 04 Taurus 53 miles one way to work, 48 miles of it is interstate. I use Mobil 1 5-20 w/ a Wix or Puralator filter, I change at 10,000 miles max. that about 3-4 times per year. so far so good.
My older Taurus's use 5-20 syn blend of whatever brand of oil and filter is on sale, changing at 6,500 miles non of my vehicles use more than 2 qts between changes.

Well we bought the van used so I don't know how the previous owner/owners took care of it. Going to have a compression and leakdown test done and go from there. I have changed the oil every 3,000-4,000 miles since we bought the van and use a ford brand oil filter. A mechanic suggested trying a can of Restor in the next oil change. I have noticed when I change the spark plugs and when I pass a car and have to accelerate fast I have noticed a smoke cloud coming out the exhaust only for a moment. I just figured it was burning off old oil build up.

Viper: that means oil is getting into the combustion chamber, either via the valve guide seals or the piston rings.
The compression and leak down test will tell you more.
For a fix in the can "Restore" is actually pretty good.

Well, back from the road trip to Arizona.
Here's the update to my long duration, high speed engine cleaning that I said I would post.
Put a total of 4,810 miles on the round trip. Previous trip last April netted 1 quart of oil usage in both directions for the same mileage travelled. This trip netted 3/4 quart down and 1/2 quart back. Looks to me like the cleaning worked.
At 141,000 miles I know I will have some oil consumption.I am going to change the oil and filter one more time with another fill of 4 quarts of Wal-Mart's 10W-30 synthetic and 1 quart of MMO. I will run it until my normal yearly AMSOIL change in September. Then I will be back to once a year with AMSOIL.
Averaged 22.7 MPG round trip running 70-80MPH depending on posted speed and A/C running all the time.
Remember...This is my senario and others who try this may not get the same results...

OEM Recommendations Rule
I would like to suggest you use Motorcraft SAE5W-20 Synthetic Blend oil, available from Wal-Mart and usually at a good price. They also have the Motorcraft FL-400S oil filter which I feel is a good one. Would also suggest you drive no more than 7,500 miles between oil and filter changes.
We've had our 2006 4.2 SEL from new and always service according to this schedule. It now has almost 90K miles and uses zero oil between changes.
The lighter viscosity oil helps with fuel economy, too.

Bad EGR gasket?
This is an old thread, I know...can you explain how a bad EGR gasket causes oil consumption? I got a Freestar w/157,000 last fall. In 5,000 miles I have added 3 quarts of oil. This seems excessive to me. I'm asking about the EGR, b/c I had to replace it when I got it (check engine light on, code for EGR). I installed a used one from a salvage yard, and re-used the steel gasket. What's the connection between EGR and using oil? Thanks.
