Removing Transmission
anybody done a tranny job on a ford freestar?
i have a 2004 and the tranny just went to chit....
need to remove so i can take it to the transmission shop for a rebuild...
i would LOVE some guidance if anyone has any suggestions!

It would be easier to just have the tranny shop remove and install the tranny. You would need the following items to do it youself, plus a few that I probably don't mention. You may also get a better warranty if they do all the work.
1. Vehicle lift (Tranny comes out from underneath)
2. Transmission jack
3. Engine support to hold the engine in-place while you remove and install the tranny
4. Tools to remove the drive axles and disconnect anything else such as tranny lines.
5. Lots of patience.
6. Don't forget a new torque converter.
How many miles are on the tranny and how often (mileage) was it serviced before it failed? The fluid should have been replaced every 30K miles.

well i am poor.. like no money at all, and the tranny shop wants $1800 JUST FOR LABOUR

i have access to all of the above items you listed, except patience..
my father in law is coming up to help me with the re-install of the new transmission.. i just wanted to get it OUT before he got here...
i have about a week to get it out, so like i said, i wanted to have as much done as possible before that..
he is a mechanic.. so there is no issues with him being able to do the work..
the van has approximately 153,XXXkms on it.. and NO the fluids were never changed since we got it @ 109,000kms....
in fact i knew NOTHING about this being required until i looked on THIS website lol...
we bought the van used from a shady used vehicle dealer, and regretted the purchase ever since!
i left my wife to the decision, and now we are stuck with it..
i have no problems doing routine maintenance on vehicles, i just did not know about the inherant issues with the 4F50N transmission until it crapped out on me..

The only issue with the 4F50N transmission is that, if you don't take care of it...it WILL fail. Fluid needs replaced every 30,000 miles or 48,000 Kms. I have 102,000 (164,000 Km) on mine without a peep and it gets used as a truck every once in a while Hence, the overload coils I installed on it. Changed the transmission filter at 30,000 and installed AMSOIL. Now since I've hit the 1000,000 mile mark, I have a new filtet and another fill of AMSOIL, I will be installing shortly. Good luck with the transmission change.
