Default 84 Mustang question

Good Morning,
I have an 85 302 carb motor with no spark. When I connect a sparkplug to the coil wire it will spark but, not when connected to the plug wire. What to check first? The cap and rotor are new. In advance thanks to any and all who answer.

Tom

If you are getting spark from the coil, is it a hot spark (blue fire and will arc about 1 1/2 inches). If so, then the coil output voltage is good. If just a short arc, then maybe the coil is weak and cannot fire the plugs. If the fire is good, then it must be going to ground internally in the distributor, unless the problem is the connection from coil wire to distributor. Follow the fire and it will tell you were the problem is.
