Default mustang chevy swap

Hey all, i have a 1987 mustang 5.0 that i have thought about puttin a new motor in and i happen to have one....but im not sure how to go about swappin it. Its a 454 chevy around the year '74, i have seen motor mounts to swap in a chevy small block but i need help on finding ones for a big block, and also headers. I wont worry about the fuel injection, im sticking to the motor's carb. Any and all help is much appreciated

Just a couple things to consider before doing this engine swap! first off do you have the suspension for this big of a engine? Also do you have a full frame already? if you just have sub frames in the front and back the full frame rail kit would be a must when putting in a big block of any kind. And finally the engine,,dont get me wrong there is nothing at all wrong with a 454 I love the big block engines of the good ol days i personally wish engines would have stayed more like them days then this whole computerized era we are in now but the thing i was concerned with is the year of the 454 your looking at. by 74 you are looking at a pretty weak engine as is from the factory.I amNot trying to offend you or dog the engine, its just things really went to crap with big blocks and small block V-8's after the end of the 60's and the begining of the "fuel bull" in the early 70's. Horsepower on these big block engines and small block V-8's for that matter were reduced to almost half as much in the mid 70's as they were in they late 60's. I bought a 455 big block oldsmoble engine one time along time ago and i was told it was from like 69 or 68 yeah sure thats what they all say.. i found out about a year late that it was about a 74 or 75 and let me tell ya it was weak!!!! the one i thought i was getting from the late 60's was rated in different set ups to as much as 390 horsepower stock the 74 or 75 i really had was only rated from like 190 to 215 max horsepower...BIG DIFFERENCE!!! needless to say i was pissed lol... so if you do some looking into it, the horsepower of that paticularbig block might not be worth the trouble unless it has been rebuilt to the specs of late 60's or maybe even the very early 70,s but by the time you get past 71 maybe 72 chalk it up they are all weak..The one thing that I will mention though is that horepower aside the big blocks will always yeild high torque rather its 60's or 70's the long stroke is still there so the torque is also. well i hope this will help you in your project I think these little mustangs are fun to have alot of toque and horsepower in,, I am currently working on a late 60's ford 427 CJ that I will be stuffing into my 01 mustang after its paid off here in 6 months and i take it completely over from my wife lol..good luck to you and let me know how it goes thru out the project if you wouldnt mind id like to know how this one turns out.

i have a friend here in houston who has completed his ls1 swap on his 88 notch. I considered doing it to, but after looking at all the work and money needed to do it, i decided to stick to 5.0 and building it. if you are really serious about toing the swap, check out ls1 tech, and see what had to be done and maybe that'll give you an idea of what will be needed.

Don't soil your Mustang with a Chevy motor.

Default Decision Made

Thanks for all the help, much appreciated. Sorry for the late reply, I had completely forgotten I had posted on this site and had to dig up my account info to log in. Anyway, I ended up staying with the 5.0 after looking into what it would take to do the swap I had in mind. The only reasons I considered doing it was because: 1. At a local track, some drivers use Chevy 350 engines in their fox bodies, and 2. The 454 was just sitting in the garage (which it still is) after a deal my father had made. It's a good turning motor, just has enough miles on it to have to do a rebuild to make it worthy of the road. It would have taken quite a bit to get a good power output from it (cylinder heads and intake are the main weak points in it) plus headers, motor mounts, and oil pan just to drop it in the 'stang, so the idea died there. I found out that the reason they put Chevy 350's in fox bodies is because the blocks withstand more stress than the 302's, and there are more parts available for them than for the 351w's.

To 91explorer: No offense taken! I had looked it up before posting the first time, the motor was from a workhorse truck so leaving it stock was never an option for this project, which is why I decided to dump the idea after roughly calculating the expense for it. For a less amount of money, I went with a mild setup on the 5.0: I had the block bored .030 over, put Keith Black hypereutectic pistons, H-beam rods and ARP bolts, E7 cylinder heads redone with Crane Cams 1.7 roller rockers and matching valve springs and also ported the intake side, E303 FRP camshaft, ported and polished stock intake, Melling high-volume oil pump, FRP 24# injectors, Walbro fuel pump...so on. There's also the average bolt-ons: 70mm throttle body, AEM Brute Force intake, Borla XR-1's. Haven't gotten it dyno'ed yet, but there is definitely a big difference!!! I'm very happy with it, especially being my first build and not having any issues so far. The car looks stock, even after popping the hood, only thing that sticks out is the cold air, but any thought of it being stock goes away when the engine growls!

For u guys asking about the motor mounts, I saw them at summitracing but I couldnt find them just now, so I don't know what to tell u :/. Then again, it's been months.

As far as the LS1, neat stuff! I've seen a lot of cars with LS1 swaps, just wasn't for me though.
