Default ABS Light, No Speedometer, won't shift

I have a '99 Ranger, 3.0L two wheel drive. The battery went down and after charging, I now have an ABS indicator light, my speedometer does not work, and the transmission will not shift out of first gear. Brake fluid and transmission fluid look fine, related fuses look ok too. I do not have a check engine light on. I have seen previous posts always pointing to the speed sensor in the differential. I have taken this out, to the parts store for a new one, but they say probably a dealer item. They (Napa and AutoZone) didn't think this sensor would affect the speedometer. They have another speed sensor they say is up on the transmission somewhere but I can't find where, and my Haynes manual says nothing about this one. Anyone had this problem, or know which sensor I should replace first? Or does it sound like a computer problem?
Thanks!

You do want the one in the differential. Leave the parts guys for looking up the part #'s and pulling parts, not for diagnosing your ride.
