AC Compressor/ Power Steering Pump

AC Compressor/ Power Steering Pump
Ok all, I have terrible luck. I'm brand new to this forum and I need some help. I just bought my truck 2000 Ford Ranger XLT 3.0L V6 about 6 months ago. It has 115k miles on it. It was running ok when all of sudden a couple weeks ago my AC compressor started smoking. SO I burnt up the clutch and in turn I need to replace the whole compressor. Then yesterday I seen a leak under the truck and my power steering went out soI see that my Power steering pump has now gone bad.
Is there any write ups on replacing these two parts myself and is there anything special I should know about to replace them?
I went and bought a Haynes manual and I am failry mechanical.
ANy help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Brian

RE: AC Compressor/ Power Steering Pump
The power steering pump is not a big deal, mostly messy when you miss the bucket with the lines. The A/C however will require evacuation of the system and recharge when you remove the lines. If you are not an A/C tech and do not have someone that is most likely you will not have the proper tools. A/C is system is best left to a pro........ PS be careful of releaing freon it can cause injure to hands as well as not the best for the environment.

RE: AC Compressor/ Power Steering Pump
Is there any place to purchase a pulley puller for the power steering pump? I know you can get them from Autozone but there is not one around me that has that part for rent.
When fixing the AC, should I replace the condenser with it?
Thanks

RE: AC Compressor/ Power Steering Pump
Sounds like your A/C compressor suffered BLACK DEATH. This is caused by lack of lubricant and moisture in the system, You have a Parallel Flow condensor. This type of condensorIS NOT flushable and should be replaced. If not replaced, you'll just kill a new compressor in short order. Don't forget to replace the orifice and I recommend the installation of an inline filter w/sight glass on the high pressure side between the condensor and the orifice.

I was told the Condensor can be blown out using a high pressure air hose and fluid? Is there any write ups on replacing any of these items? Maybe a write up on replacing the condenser?
Thanks for your help.

RE: AC Compressor/ Power Steering Pump
The type of condensor in your vehicle IS NOT flushable, the passages are too small. And the design of it allows particals to settle to the bottom of is and not get flushed out. You may get some stuff out, but not enough to keep your system from being trashed in short order after repair. The crud in a failed system solidifies into an epoxy type substance that no cleaning/flushing chemical can remove. Once the system is recharged and running, the hot freon softens and liquifies the crud and it then releases the solids that it was holding which in turn plugs up the orifice/expansion valve causing oil starvation to a new compressor

I believe that I mentioned in a post here which belt would work to bypass the A/C compressor as I had to do that a few years ago on our Freestar on a July trip from NY to AZ. If I can find the info, I'll post it here.

Here's the post. Read the whole thing as one person had problems getting the bypass bely on while I had no issues.
