Default Biggest Engine i could get in an 88 Ranger XLT?

hey all, just curious if anyone knows how big i can go with an engine before i'd have to make any major adjustmants to the frame or the fenders of the truck.

i want to keep it stock looking (on the outside) it currently has a 2.9 V6 in it. i'd be fine with a 4.0 or 4.6 HO, but not sure if either of those would fit.

any ranger experts out there think they could help? or give me some pointers... bigger is better.

You can fit a 460 under the hood with very minor modifications. If you have A/C, that would have to go as the 460 would take up part of the area required for the evaporator. You have to cut away about 1/2 of the plastic inner fender/wheel well covers and dimple in the 2 tunnel corners about 1" for a good C-6 tranny to clear. Other than that, no body would know.

There used to be a company out of California that had a kit to install the 460 C.I.D. into the Ranger. They also sold a 6 point roll cage w/lexan plexiglass rear window as the roll bars went thru the rear window. They also had a shortened 9" rear w/wheel tubs for larger tires. Can't remember the name of the company nat this time.

i'll be doin some searching, i appreciate the help. it's got a dead short somewhere in the electrical system of it. winshield wipers go crazy, missing headlights but my brights work, and the plow lights work fine, and it's suckin juice from somewhere cuz it takes a brand new fully charged battery down to nothing in a day. when it's NOT running. so i have my work cut out

Wiper issue is probably a bad Turn Signal/Wiper switch assembly. As far as the drain on the battery, I would put an amp clamp meter on the positive battery lead and look for a load reading. If a load, start pulling fuses one at a time until the load dissapears. That will be you problem circuit.

If going with a V8 swap of any size, get rid of the LOW Pressure In-Tank/HIGH Pressure Frame Rail mounted pump system and go with just a straight HIGH pressure In-Tank pump set-up.

alright i'll see if i can take it up to school and throw an amp clamp on it. yeah it's wierd how the short even happend, my guess is exposed wire, but i drove it, and then let it sit for a few months dew to u-joints all around and calipers and rotors and some driveline issues, and didn't drive it really at all, then when i went out there to start her up to start work on it, it started actin all funny with the short and stuff.
