Default Blend Door problem

First post, so please forgive me if i mess something up.

Before i left (currently in the sandbox) my heater blew only one temp. I checked the blend door fix, and sure enough, my blend door is broken. The motor works great. The blend door fix does not work. So, it appears i will need to replace just the blend door, or the whole plenum. I've seen people mention replacing just the blend door, but i have yet to see or read about anyone actually doing it. Is there an easy way? Any shortcuts? I won't be back home till summer, so i've got some time to think over the best plan of action. I really don't want to spend ~$1k to have a new plenum installed in a 98 ranger with 125K+ miles on it.

Does anyone have any recommendations/tips/tricks/suggestions?

Thanks for all thehelp!

Is there any sort of a tutorial on how to replace the entire plenum? My Hanes manual doesn't get into this. I've got a few months to figure my best plan of action, as i'm in the middle east right now. but as soon as i get home, my R&R time is goign to be fixing this. I'd sooner do it myself than pay through the nose to have someone else do it.
