Default brake help-1999 Ranger

My son said that he would replace the rear brakes on a friends truck of course with my help. I want to find step by step diagrams so that he can try and do it himself (with my guidance) so Im not sitting over his shoulder telling him to do this and that.

It is a 1999 Ranger 4WD 4.0L and I just need diagrams or pics of the rear brakes. Everything is being replaced since when we pulled the drum off the passenger side springs fell out and the cylinders are blown and on the drivers side is missing a whole lot.

The owner of the truck doesnt know anything about mechanics so when the last person that looked at the truck pulled the drum off the passenger side and something fell out didnt know any better when the guy told him "dont worry about it, its just for the emergency brake you dont need that"....well the only thing completely missing when I pulled off the drum was the adjuster...

Any help with pics, diagrams and info is greatly appreciated...Thanks

Kristine

Is this image for the driver's side or passenger's side?

I don't know I found it on the internet.

The Haynes manual has more pictures than I care for.

The brakes are standard ford servo action brakes. The only difference from side to side is the brake adjusters, but even that doesn't matter; just make sure the cup that comes off is pointing toward the front of the car.
The secondary shoe return spring goes onto the anchor first, then the primary shoe (which is the front shoe, the secondary shoe is the rear one, that the e-brake lever goes on).
ALso, if applicable, the shoe with the shorter length of brake lining goes on the front (primary) side. This helps with over-adjusting that these systems sometimes had.

the rear brakes can be a real pain to replace if one doesn't have the proper tools to do the job. it always a learning process when you have someone that has never tinkered with a piece of equipment as complicated as a vehicle.

Ever used a large (#3) phillips screwdriver as a spring installer? Or a pair of sidecutters for removal? Works like a charm on these brakes.

I know that you use what you have on hand but when I do drum brakes I have the proper tools to do the job and yes a pair of side cutters is always part of it. That's what I use to remove the e-brake cables
