Default Gas cap clicking closure.....

[]I have a 2001 Ford Ranger. The last time I gassed up and closed my gas cap it did not click. Needless to say my 'check engine' light went on a few minutes after I left gas station. I checked it again and saw that there was a little rust around the rim that the gas cap goes on but I do not understand why the clicking isn't happening. Is it just a matter of buying a new gas cap? I don't like the check engine light being on all the time for I will never know when I really do have engine problems. Can anyone help me with this?

Thank you, Reggi

try a new cap and disconnect your battery to erase the codes then if it comes back on you will know it is something else
