Default Ranger gear ??

I have 2000 model ford ranger with the 3.0L V6. It has a really high gear in it and I would like to put something a littel lower in it. Meaning to have a little more bottom end instead of an interstate gear. Do any of you know what gears comes in these from the factory? And any suggestions on what to go with? Automatic I might want to add. Thanks!

Default RE: Ranger gear ??

My 1994 Ford Ranger came stock with the 3.27 gear ratio. Way too high. I took the 3.27's out (this is easier than mechanics want to make you believe. My truck is four-wheel drive and it was barely a two day project, just take your time and pay attention to what you are doing) and replaced them with 4.10. The 4.10's gave me a lot more towing capacity, and is really a very suitable gear ration for the 4.0 ltr engine. My gas mileage dropped from about 18 to 17, so not a huge drop, but significant. You might consider going to the 3.73 gear ratio. This is going to bump up your towing capacity about 1000 lbs and you ought to be able to push up to probably a 32 inch tire. Make sure you shop around a lot before buying gears. There is a huge discrepancy in price depending on where you buy your gears. You should be able to get a ring and pinion set (front end on a lot of the Rangers use reverse gearing, make sure you get the right one) for about $200 each.
