Default running too lean

I have a 2003 Ranger that has 98,000 miles on it and have never had any problems with it until last october when my check engine light came on. I had been driving off road, well not really off road just tall grass with uneven ground and some small tree brances I drove over. I plugged the computer into the socket and it said it is running too lean. What does this mean? What is wrong with my truck? I have a feeling it has something to do with the exhaust but not sure what. I will be making a trip to louisville in the coming weeks (400 miles round trip) is this something I should be worried about? Is it safe to make the trip? How much will the repairs cost?

Looks like you've been waiting for an answer for a while. If your still interested, do you have one code or two, does it read, one bank is lean or both. You didn't say what motor you had or the code. Did you possibly rip a harnass at the O2 sensor? Look underneath at the harnass. Does it run bad?
