Transmission on ford ranger
Hey does anybody know if ford had some transmission problems on any of the rangers. I think mine may be slipping a little. Sometimes when I slow down and start to speed back up the truck will jerk and kick into gear..Strange any suggestions???

What year ranger do you have? If it's older or high milleage, has it been maintained? When you slow down, then put you foot as the gas, the jerk you feel could also be from worn u-joints, but that would not explain the shifting into high gear.

It's doubtfull that it would cause a slipping problem, but with 64,000 miles, I would be sure to change the trans fluid/filter at the first chance. If the truck was purchased used, which it seems being you pulled a carfax report, you have no idea what driving conditions the trans was under before you took ownership. A little tip thay may save you quite a bit of $$$, if in fact you trans is just starting to slip. Try changing the fluid/filter and using 1 bottle of the Lucas trans fluid along with the regular ATF. Not sure what it is about that stuff, but I own a '85 F-150 that had the trans start to slip a few years ago and I have always changed the fluid every 50,000 miles. The last 2 times I changed it I used one bottle of the Lucas along with Vavoline high milleage ATF and the problem has gone away compleatly. I cannot promise that doing so will cure your problem, but it can't hurt to try before going further into it like a rebuild. I have put almost 73,000 miles and 2 fluid changes since doing this and have had no further problems with slipping whatsoever. If you decide to do the fluid change, be sure to drain the converter, if yours happens to have the drain plug in it. They all had them in the past, but most do not today and I am not certain when they stopped being used on the ranger converters. If you you want to check for one, just remove the rubber plug on your bellhousing and use a large flat tipped screwdriver to gently turn the flywheel. Mark your starting point and continue around until you either see the square plug or your starting point.

thanks for the tip. hey you mentioned something about the U joints slipping give me some info on that. I noticed today when I pulled out from the red light that the truck pulled out fine, and then like something slipped. When I come to a stop if feels it slips again back into place or something. I feel like I have play and slack in something. I have only had this truck for a month, and just now starting to get to know it well...

I have a prob. w/ my tranny, but its not exactly the same. My tranny keeps shifting in and out of overdrive when I'm on the freeway, especially when I have the crusie control on. I just had it rebuilt about 15,000 miles ago too![:@]

if your trans was just rebuilt recently, Is that when the shifting in/out of overdrive started? Either way, they should have some kind of warranty. I would take it in before doing even more unnecessary wear than you already have.
