Default What is that smell??

I drive a 93 ford ranger splash. 4 cylinder. 5 speed. with about 95k miles on it.
everything is doing really great with it. i already replaced the transfercase in it.i have replaced the theromstat.along with the normal upkeep of it.i am also replacing the slave cylinder this week.
but i have a problem that i cant figure out on it. i have this certain smell that comes from under the hood, it does not happen all the time. it just happens once in a while. i happens most when my engine works alot, it might not be hot, but when it gets warmer than normal. i used to have an over heating problem with it, but i replaced the thermostat, which it dearly needed, and since then no problem.
i have asked a couple people if they can smell it, and they say they can smell gas but nothing else. im not sure what it is. all i know is its not good, because i seem to get worse gas milage when i can smell it. and it also makes me sick..
Im so lost. can you help me?? any ideas???

Welcome to the site..

Can you discribe the smell?

Is it burning your eyes, or smell like burning oil.. Does it have a 'sweet' kind of smell? All of them may be iritating.. Any check engine light? Any spotting on the ground? or visible smoke or haze when the hood is opened/closed. Any excessive smoke black/blue/white coming from the tail pipe? Any running concerns like surging, misfire, stalling with the smell?Any additional info. may help point to the cause..

If it smells like gas, check your gas lines going to the fuel rail, also check with a light, your fuel injectors, see if their leaking. If you replace injectors, replace all, plus the rail and O rings, the rail and Orings are very important or you will have leaking problems when you replace the injector!! Also if the MAF sensor going to the air filter is disconnected or bad it could make the engine run rich or lean and cause bad gas milage. the O2 sensor on the exaust can cause bad milage as well. hope this helps.

it burns the eyes. it is a sweet smell. there is a check engine light that comes on. it does surge. no spotting. no smoke or hazing.no stalling or misfiring. but my RPM's seem to run higher than normall by about.5k other than that nothing odd.

yes that does help. thank you. i will look at the lines and the injectors.

so the last few days here has been pretty cold in the mornings. and my truck has been running pretty good. but after it warms up, it then cools off in the evening/night time. and when driving as much as i do my truck seems to be running alot when it warm and cold. esp when it cold. and for some reason its been running really goood during the cold parts of the day. but after i park it its, "smoking" a little. i have thought about maybe my engine just being hot, and it the steam off that but it not, because it like comes and goes, and i touch my engine and nothing seems to be hot to the touch. except my altinator does get a little warm.
but then back to the warm time of day. it will be running really good and all and then my truck starts running really warm. and my gauge goes like sky high. but i dont know why, because i can drive it like a kid or i can drive it like an old grand ma and do 10 under the speed limit and it still does this.
does this have something to do with what is wrong with it??
