06 Taurus gets Poor Fuel Economy
HI Gang,
This is my first post. I finally got rid of my 97 Taurus with 170K miles. Loved the car, but it was time to get something newer.
I picked up a 06 Taurus SE with 31,000 miles on it. I've noticed that I've been getting really bad fuel economy. I just barely get 300 miles on a full tank.
The air fileter has been replaced, air pressure is ample. Not sure what it could be. Anybody have any suggestions?
Thank!

Whats your exact tire pressure? At 31K you could probbaly use a new fuel fitler, and a tranny flush. A big factor on fuel economy is driver style and driving condtions.
Calculate the exact MPG: Full up until the pump quits automatically, reset trip and drie until time to refill again. Pump gas until the pump quits automatically. Take the miles driven and divid by gallon just pumped. The MPG figure will be more conclusive.
Really focus on driving smooth and easy; no jack rabbit start, no speeding, mantain steady speeds, try to drive at the "bottom" of a gear- lowest RPM's possilbe. 300 miles out of a tank on a Taurus might be about 22ish MPG. If it driven hard in poor condtions(stop and go), anything around 20 MPG is probably pretty good.

At 10 MPG something is wrong. Replace the air filter, fuel filter, new spark plugs/wires,oil/tranmisson fliud, check tire pressue ~ 35cold psi. Drive it really easy, and take it to a auto parts store and see if they can run a OBD II scan for anything like a faulty oxygen senor or something. Keep us posted.

I've got a '01 wagon w/ the 24valve DOHC and I got 20 mpg exactly on the first tank. I just put in fuel injector cleaner, new air filter, topped off the air in the tires and I'm switching to synthetic oil. The most I'm hoping for is 22 or 23 mpg. If you have any highway driving at all, you should be able to get about 20 mpg. That's the downside to driving a midsized car and a V6. Try a compact 4 cyl of you want to get 30 mpg.
