Default 97 Taurus 3.0 ignition timing problem

Hi. I have a 97 Taurus with the 3.0L (12 valve) and I replaced the cam position sensor. (looks like a stubby distributer) I reset or drained the computer several times and installed the CPS as per what the Ford mechanic said. The problem is that I get 22 degrees of timing at Idle. Specs are 10 + or - 2 deg. The car pings like crazy. I have to use high test. I even rotated the CPS 180 degrees from the recommended position. No luck. Doesn't change the timing. I am baffled. Any help on this one?
