Default 98 TAURUS HARD BRAKE PEDAL AT TIMES

most of the time the brake pedal is mushy and makes a ssshhhhhhh sound when you press it down. you hear air coming from under the dash and when you push it further it makes a whistling noise, very loud. At times while driving the pedal is very very hard. also when the pedal is mushy it travels 3/4 of the way down before the car starts to brake. there are quite a few other wierd problems with this car but this one is more important right now. any help would be appreciated thanks all

The hard pedel and ssshhhh sound makes me think you have a bad booster. The soft/ mushy pedel is most likely another issue. I would replace the booster, bleed the brakes and adjust the rear brakes.

Ibet you are right on the money.I bought an aftermarket cardone booster today $ 56.00. This car was driven very hard for about a year, it was used for paper delivery. It was about 70 to 80 hard miles per day all stop and go I don't think the rear brakes are doing much at all. also the parking brake doesnt work. i'll try the booster saturday or sunday. i'll try to take a few pics during the process and post the result when i'm done. if anyone has any tips please feel free to chime in. thanks
john

Take your time on the booster, it can be hard to get the studs through the firewall and the pedel mount. It helps sometimes to have a helper inside the car to get things aligned.

THANKS FOR THE REPLIES, I REPLACED THE BOOSTER THIS PAST WEEKEND. IT WAS NOT THAT BAD OF A JOB, BUT IT DID TAKE MORE TIME THAN I FIGURED. ALL OF MY NOISES ARE GONE AND THE CAR STOPS SO MUCH BETTER. I AM ALSO GOING TO REPLACE THE REAR SHOES AND TRY TO FIGURE OUT WHY THE PARKING BRAKE DOESN'T WORK.
