Default bearings?

I have a 97 taurus, it recently started making a clanking noise in the engine and shooting a lot of white smoke out of the tail pipe. the mechanic told me it spun a bearing. But it stopped making the noise and now just smokes a little. and runs fine. any suggestions?

Could be rod bearings or you may have blown a head gasket.

You may want to checkout www.taurusclub.com for help and tips.
