Possibly the transmission range sensor. It is also called a neutral safety switch.

Ford runs a lot of circuits through the TR sensor. I am not saying that is the problem, just a place to start looking. If that is the problem, it is fairly simple to replace. It is bolted to the top of the transaxle just under the shift cable linkage. Could also possibly be the ignition switch. Hard to diagnose without hands on it.

Dirty/Old battery cables are usually the place to start. They can make a lot of bad electrical problems when dirty and are usually the cheapest and fastest place to begin with electrical problems (aside from the fuse box fuses).
