Phantom A/C in '99 Taurus SE wagon..........
Hi folks!
We have a '99 Taurus SE wagon with Electronic Automatic Temperature Control (EATC). On hot days, shortly after starting and going, with the control on auto and the temp set to say 74-76 degrees, the fan speed will ramp up and the AC blows cold air, as it should. After maybe 15-20 minutes, the fan continues to blow but the AC "dies" and just blows air, but the cabin temp still requires cooling. There is a smell that accompanies this that I would call "a humid" smell.
If left alone, after some time, the AC may come back blowing cold air, but not as cold as before andwill stop again with, again, no change in fan speed. And again, the interior cabin temp is still hot enough to require cooling.
In July 2005 a dealer in Delaware witnessed the problem and replaced the EATC module. That seemed to fix it but now the problem is back! Do I need to replace the module again? These things aren't cheap.
Thanks in advance for any and all input.
Dave

Hey twigfarm. If the evaperator freezes up, the air cannot blow through the frozen evap. So there would be absolutely no airflow. The odor could be due to moisture building up in the plenum. If the force of the air does not change, look for something that shuts the compressor off. Possibly a bad low pressure switch.

Yeah, it sounds like you are slightly low on freon. Being that temperature and pressure are directly proportional, if you are a little low on freon, the temperature in the evaporator coil will drop below freezing and the condensation will freeze restricting the airflow. When this happens the pressure and temperature will drop even more compounding the problem. A little "shot" of freon should take care of the problem. You can get a can of R134a at the auto parts store with a guage an hose attached for easy charging. The guage even has a color coded scale to help you get the right amount of charge. Typically, you need about 27-28 psi on the low side while the compressor is running. If the compressor is not running, look for the low suction pressure switch on the receiver tank on the suction side of the compressor. Disconnect the plug and connect a jumper across the 2 holes to get the compressor running. Make sure that the evaporator is not frozen up when you do this.
