Default Replace the Tranny or Torque Converter?

I have a 2003 Taurus 3.0 with 120k miles. It runs great until about 4 months ago noticed slippage a low speeds particularly in a turn when I started in the AM. Got better as it warmed up never a prob a highway speeds. I did have slippage once about a year ago a high way speed on a long trip pulled over and it leaked transmission fluid out of the overflow I assume.

Any how no problems till 2 weeks ago besides that and I it goes out on the highway just like someone put it in Neutral. I get nothing when I shift. The Transmission fluid looks ok on the dip stick, no metal.

Everything I read says these Torque converters are P.O.S. Everyone wants to haul it in and replace the Tranny and finance me of course for the title. I don't have that money and I have a friend that thinks he can do the Torque converter in his garage if I give him a couple of weekends. I got time as the Bus is working for now but I would like to get a date again this year so I would like to fix this soon.

What do yall think about just replacing the torque converter and how hard is this to do outside of a professional garage?

Suggest if at all possible that you do or have checked the pressures in the trans. It has a EPC solenoid ( Electronic Pressure Control )that is pulse width controlled by the computer. The computer adjusts the pressure based on certain inputs such as trans fluid temp ,load etc., You could be correct regarding the torque converter, but it's a lot of work to go through needlessly if that isn't the problem. There is an expression in the industry, "Test don't guess", . LOL !
