1996 Ford Probe SE won't shift past 3rd gear.
Hi guys. I have a 96 Ford Probe SE,2 Liter 4cyl DOHC, automatic trans w/overdrive.
Today I was driving from one of side of the city to the other. About 40 miles into the trip my Ford Probe would shift fain, get to 30 MPH and then it sounded like it would go into neutral and the engine RPM would go up, because I was accelerating. I stopped at a parking lot to let the engine cool since I had no choice but to drive the Probe with the O/D on OFF. Otherwise it would get to 30 MPH, slip into "neutral" and the car would have to go down to 25 MPH, when it would shift back into gear automatically. Some guy told me that he had the same problem with a Subaru, I asked what the mechanic told him the problem was. He said it was the tranny's governor, needed to be replaced. Would you guys have any suggestions as to what may be going on with my car ? Any answers would be greatly appreciated, Thanks :-)

Being that my 96 Ford Probe is almost 12 years old and needs work. I asked a guy who used to be a mechanic, I explained to him what the car is doing and when it's doing it. He said it's because the engine is getting too hot. I'm going to get the oil changed soon. Also the tranny fluid and filter change. Fletcher's Automotive advised me a couple of months ago that it needs a water pump too. I think it also needs or would really benefit from a new thermostat and a good radiator flush, and if there's extra money a fuel injector cleaning.
