Default Question about 2004 Thunderbird air compressor

I have a 2004 Ford Thunderbird that has only 25,000 miles. I've had no problems with the car, but rarely drive it as you can see. I started seeing a very small leak and took it to the dealership. Turns out, the Freon is leaking from the air conditioner compressor, and they tell me the only way to fix it is to replace the compressor to the tune of $1,000 (parts & labor)!! Can this be possible given the low mileage and it is stored in a climate controlled garage?? Yikes, too much money. Suggestions or opinions? Thanks for any advice.

There is a ceramic seal on the front of the air conditioning compressor and believe it or not from non or little use it doesn't get lubricated and leaks. Depending on where the compressor is located some seals can be replaced right on the vehicle. A good shop can replace that seal either on or off the vehicle. The system does need to be evacuated and recharged with refrigerant after the repair is completed. Get a few estimates and opinions, then decide.
