Default 1987 F-250 muffler

I just recently came upon a beat up old f-250. It runs ok but doesnt look like much. It is a little loud while it is running and I noticed the tail pipe is gone from the muffler back. If I install a new tail pipe, will this cut down on the noise? Plus will just running a pipe out to the back bumper be ok. There is plenty of clearance for just a straight pipe. I just don't want to do it twice so if i need a muffler i rather do it all at once. But money is a little tight so I dont want to buy one if i don't need to.

If it's a little loud, then I would suspect that the muffler's guts are burned/rusted out. Adding a tail pipe will not quiet down the exhaust. Only a new muffler will. The tail pipe can go straight out provided you use an "Over the axle" tail pipe.
