Default 1990 F-350 7.3l diesel Transmission question

Okay, I am looking to buy a 1990 Ford F-350 with a non turbo 7.3l diesel V8. It has a bad tranny, and that era ford tranny's die horribly fast, so what tranny's, weather it be earlier or later makes, can I put in the truck? Thank you.

The C-6 would be the one. It's only a 3 speed, but they lasted forever. The E4OD was availible in the diesels, but different in that it had a throttle cable for load input. If you did a good overhaul on the E4OD, it would last a good long while.

Thank you. I had read that those work. I have a C-6 in my current truck, has lasted forever. It just seems like every E40D i have seen has blown. Thank you for the information. Very helpful.
