1995 Ford Taurus odometer
Hi
I have a 1995 Ford Taurus with 30, 000 miles on it, grama's car.
The odometer jumps up and down while driving and makes a terrible grinding noise.
Is the odometer bad or is it the cable?
The Ford dealer says its the odometer and that it was a comman problem in the Taurus and with $500.00 dollars I can get a new one.
Does any one know a place I can send it out to get it fixed?
Thanks
Ken

Sounds like the cable is bad.....you can change that yourself.....if you have any mechanical knowledge that is.
Disconnect the cable from the transmission or wherever it's connected under the vehicle....then pull out the cable......and have a look, bet it's worn out in some way. If not, you may want to try to put some grease on it or graphite lube and reinsert it.....just to see if you can save yourself some money.
If that doesn't work, buy a new cable and install it following the installation procedures and that should take care of it.
I suppose the odometer itself could be bad.....if so, don't worry about it. It's not going to hurt anything.....it will eventually go out.
Just be glad Grandma let you have the car. You're lucky to have it.
OBTW....anyone who would pay $500 to have their odometer fixed has more $ than they need. That's crazy.
