Unhappy 2001 Ford Mustang Power Steering

Recently when I went to get an oil change, the mechanic recommended a power steering flush. I've never heard of this before and I don't see that in the scheduled maintenance for a 2001 Ford Mustang. From what I know, a flush could cause the pump to go out. (If it hasn't already.)

Well, the power steering fluid is a dark brown and now there is a squeal when I turn the wheel. Would a flush fix this problem? Do I simply need to change the fluid? Or do I need a new pump?

Additional details: It doesn't squeal when the car is "cool." (If that makes any sense.) It ONLY squeals when "sharp" turns are being made. The fluid level isn't low. I'm not having any trouble turning the wheel at all. The steering is still the same.

If it is indeed a squeal, I would look at the belt and pulleys to see if there is any glazing on the belt. Sounds like there is slippage on hard turns.

Thanks!!

I called Ford and explained to them what's going on. Mechanic said it may be the serpentine belt. (Fingers crossed.)

I appreciate your reply!

Turns out it was the ball joints. Needed a bit of lubrication. Recently had a lot of snow/rain over the past few weeks. Neighborhood mechanic didn't even charge me for it.

Thanks for the repair post. Might help another poster have something to look at on their problem.
