Default 2002 Escape problem - alternator or starter

I have a 2002 escape and am having trouble starting the vehicle. Battery replaced once 4 yrs ago and again 2 yrs ago. I try to start the vehicle and lights come on but it doesn't turn over. It will start at some point if I turn the key and give it gas right away. I have been told it can be either the alternator or the starter. any ideas? Thanks

When you say doesn't turn over, do you mean there is no noise coming from the engine? If so, have the battery cables checked for tightness and cleanliness on both ends. If the cables are clean and tight, have the ignition switch checked.

new to this. It does make a noise like its trying to start and then stops. all lights on dash are on. If I step on the gas while trying to start it works after a few trys. I do have 92000 miles on the truck. I am being told that since it does not happen all the time I have to wait until it does.

Does it mainly act up when the engine is cold? Such as sitting overnight or all day at work? If it does, I would suspect possibly the IAC valve. This is what acts like the choke on the newer cars. Picture of similar one is below.

Yes that is exactly when it happens, not all the time, but it is happening more frequently now. Going to have someone look at and possibly clean it this weekend. Thanks so much for the tip. I will let you know how I make out.

Hey way2old your good! Changed the ICA valve yesterday and so far it has started every time. The $35 spent on the part was much less than a new alternator or starter. Keeping my fingers crossed that it will continue to work. Thanks!

Default Another question

would this IAC valve affect the gas mileage? The mpg was terrible, you could almost see the gauge move as you were driving. Now it appears I am getting better mileage. either that or my gas gauge is broken? LOL

The IAC vouylod affect is some depending on where it is stuck. More than likely it was a small vacuum leak in the system somewhere that was cured with the parts change.

Default Still working!

This solved the problem. The truck is still running and I have not had a problem since this valve was changed. But my daughter want to sell and get a car with better gas mileage. Any tips for selling, privately, on this site etc? Thanks
