2007 Edge hard shifting
2007 Ford Edge with 43,000 miles makes a clunk when shifting from first to second gear...occasionally when down shifting. It does not happen all the time and does not matter if it is hot or cold. It has been to the dealer twice with no luck they could not duplicate the problem and there were no service codes. Anyone with similiar experience or suggestions would be greatly apprecitated.
Thanks,
Rob

Has the PCM the latest calibration for the 2-1 downshift clunk, which also helps the upshift? This was a very common problem for the '07 Edge. These transmissions also has alot of problems with the Output shaft speed and Turbine shaft speed sensors, which were named in a TSB about all sorts of these problems. However, since you only name the 1-2 shift concern, this may not be a problem.
On the other hand, these sensors could conceivably 'drop out' monetarily (they were a devil to nail sometimes) or spike, and create this very concern (if severe enough, they would (usually) flag a code and give only 5th gear until the key was cycled or the problem cleared up. It would take a good road test to verify this (or not), but a little 'clunkiness' was always to be accepted with this powertrain.

To the best of my knowledge they have not calibrated anything. Would the check engine light come on if it did have a code? That light has never came on and they are telling me that there have been no active codes. Thanks for the help.

Maybe I wasn't clear enough. Let me recapitulate this.
Yes, there was a reflash to help (specifically) the 2-1 downshift. Also, these can have either of the sensors open up momentarily and NOT set a code. That's the bitch about OBDII; the error has to happen pretty nearly exactly twice in a row for the error to flag, though that's not quite set in stone, and I don't feel like going into a long disseration on how the executive diagnositic monitor will set error codes. I've seen this problem happen intermitantly, and it can be difficult to catch.
