Sometimes you have to start at the beginning , like right at the switches on the steering wheel. It might require that you disconnect the battery and introduce some addl problems, but you might need to confirm the switches on the steering wheel are making good contact for the system to operate as you are directing. You would need an ohmmeter to do this. All you are confirming is continuity when the switch is depressed, or interruption of continuity when the operation is cancelled.
The problems you create when you disconnect the battery to prevent accidental triggering of the air bag, could be loss of radio stations set in memory, plus engine idle operation. The radio stations you can easily reset, the idle relearn is accomplished by starting the engine and not touching the throttle pedal and the system will start to relearn on it's own. Intermittent problems can take a while to pin down.
